League Round #2 Kirkkonummi, postmortem

Second league round is now behind us and What results! We took the league round by storm and division 1′s respectable second position was great advancement from the disappointment of the first round.

Saturday started with league and first matchup was Cyclone vs. Urho. Urho’s roster has changed quite a bit from last year and they ended last in SPBL’s first round. We started the game aggressive with pushing both sides of the field. We took the first point. In next point Urho shot our guys from the moves and Raffe was left alone in the snake. 1-1.  Point number three ended up to Cyclone with a 141 for Urho deciding the point. 20 seconds was enough to choose a victor for the fourth point with both sides of the field rampaged by our guys. You would think that this would have broken the back of Urho, but they mustered their players and quickly took next two points. Last point was again a quick point and we took a close 4-3 victory. Some of the loosing points were decided by penalties, which have been a problem point for us in the past. So in next games we needed to be more strict with our own eliminations.

Pics from the Grind Grand Opening

Link to Gallery After quite a lot of sweat and tears and not too much blood on the field, we finally got the turf project finished and it needed a proper initiation. The beautiful sunday consisted of a lot of sunshine, a few games, a few drills, great BBQ food, some zipline fun and swimming in the lake. Great success! Hit the picture to get to the gallery, or just hit this.

We’ve been quite busy recently, sorry for not posting updates since SPBL Ikaalinen.. We do have a tournament report in the oven, and also some insights to how to tackle a turf project. My personal tip of the day, book a trip to Italy for the project week – it’s lot less painful! Most probably I will be hearing reminders of my managerial efforts for at least a few years to come. :)

We’re also looking into further improving the live scoring for the next SPBL round in Kirkkonummi on June 18th and 19th for your pleasure. :)

Season 2011 Is Finally Here!

It’s been a long while since the tournament season has started this late for Helsinki Cyclone. Ever since the inception of the Millennium Series, the team has started the tournament season with a trip somewhere warm to play the series, or at least wait out a storm or a volcano. Or both. :) This year the Cyclone family has a few weddings and a bunch of other responsibilities that forced us to take a year off from the Millennium Circuit. Fear not, we will return in 2012! Meanwhile, the SPBL Finnish league will start next weekend in Ikaalinen, and we’re STOKED!

The Perfect Team Dinner @ Farang

Every now and then we get together and organize a team dinner at someones house or in a restaurant. This time the event took place in one of the best asian restaurants in Finland called Farang. Farang is a modern asian gourmet restaurant which serves flavors from southeast asian kitchen. The restaurant is partially owned by Tomi Björck who is one of the finnish Master Chef judges and one of the “rockstars of finnish cookery”… and one of the chefs that ladies seem to like very much ;)

Back to work!

After a bit of a pause after the last Finnish League and Millennium Series Paris… No, wait, who am I kidding? After way too long of a break – over a month longer than last year – it’s again time to gather our sports gear and hit the gym. The demand for this has been steadily developing as the spouses become more and more annoyed with the expanding blob taking up space on the sofa. And just when I got to resting a pint handily on the belly..

Millennium Bitburg 2010 Photos by BullitProof Monkey

A series of storage media related problems delayed publishing these pictures almost half a year.. Ah well, what could be better in the darkening nights of fall than to enjoy memories from the sunny German Millennennium 2010 in Bitburg! The picture takes you to the gallery by BullitProof Monkey, enjoy!

SPBL Mikkeli – the final round revisited

After finishing third at the Kirkkonummi event, we knew we had to step it up a notch before the last leg – less than a month away. Luckily we were not the only ones having difficulties at the event, as our finals opponent from the previous rounds Urho Musta also struggled and finished out of the final four. That left us with a few points worth of margin in the series with Urho Musta, Dream Team Turku and Helsinki Trivoga also in the run for the big cup.

Next: Last League

So our games in Kirkkonummi weren’t that perfect. In Championship league we ended at 3rd place with Trivoga taking both top positions. In the Semi match Trivoga Silver showed great skill in changing their play againsta us. In Div1 again we were slow to start, with a lot of mistakes in the prelims. Still we got through to semis and finals, but GameOver was too tough an opponent, like all season.

After Kirkkonummi we had our end-season break week, when everyone got to heal their wounds and do those “family-oriented” activities. After that we’ve been playing a lot of game trainings and have rebuilt the field twice. We have to say we like the Paris layout better that the Austrian. The Austrian field felt like something developed outside Ring three whilst drunk. But enough of Bit*hing.

The last League round in Mikkeli will be this caturday. First Div is going to play the morning and League the afternoon. We feel strongly that the we have the teams to take the first in both divisions. In league we have calculated that we need fifth place to win the whole Series. Something that has been bad this year, is that official standings haven’t been published publicly. In div one I guess overall we have a chance for second or third place.  After the games we will celebrate our great Finnish season and party. It’s also nice that many of the wives/girlfriends/boyfriends/KitchenAid’s are comming along to see what this thing is all about.

LiveLeague will continue, with running scores for both League and Div 0ne. Div two and three are out of the question,  because of time management issues. This time we will have a dedicated person, who will run the scores and will run on cheap Finnish lager. This way our players (that being me) can concentrate on the games. If we will get somekind of sponsorship for this thing next year, we might do all the divisions.

After this week our training goes to a lower gear. Some of our domestic tournament players will probably slow their training schedule to one or two trainings per week. Of course we will have Millennium Paris to go, and Cyclone family will support our Mill players as much as possible, with team-game trainings still mandatory for all.
