LiveLeague 2011:Kirkkonummi (#2)

Welcome to live scoring service for league round 2; sorry no bikini girls waiving a cardboard sign. Kirkkonummi, Finland, lays about 30 klicks west of Helsinki. Here you find rolling fields of  wheat, a paintball field and us liveleaguing. Will young and fast Take Over finally take gold, with the last rounds teachings under belt? Will Cyclone continue to reign supreme? Or will the others show their true colors. You will see it here! Games start at 9:00 Saturday with League. On Sunday Div 2 plays the morning and Div 1 the evening halfs.

Again we will do a little bit pick and choose what we will cover. This time it will be League, Div 1, Div 2. We will try something new again. I will live-blog Cyclone League games and medal matches for league. My prose is often compared to those of Harlequin books, so we’ll see how it goes. We’ll also push some videos to the site (quicktime plugin required, sorry).

Please answer a quick survey, it’ll take a moment and we will customise our work next round based on answers:

SPBL Ikaalinen 2011 – a tough start for the season

It’s already been a month after the first leg of the SPBL Finnish Championship League, sorry about that – we had a bit of a landscaping project after the tournament, and a sudden outbreak of summer weather made dating a laptop the last in line for things to do..  Still a day left before the second tournament though!

Coming into the season 2011 after winning the championship last year, we knew there was no easy ride to victory as we would be the ones to beat this season. We did a punishing (but voluntary) physical fitness program over the winter months – many of the guys lost quite a bit of weight and gained endurance. After some time off from the markers we begun the weekly trips to Sparta Reball, some 160Km from Helsinki to blast tons of reps and drive back home again. As the spring progressed, we begun outdoor practises at our own field, grinding at the sandpit up to three times a week for a month before the first tournament – only to have our asses handed to us in the two first games.

Talk about a rude awakening – three more prelim games to go. Continue reading ‘SPBL Ikaalinen 2011 – a tough start for the season’ »

MS 2011 London Layout

The guys  designing the Millennium layouts have been quite creative this year providing us one symmetrical layout, which wasn’t that much fun after all and the Paris layout that seems to offer countless variations off the bat (seems in present tense, as the next SPBL is played on that). The layout for Basildon seems to have some resemblance to the paris design, but it has a lot less effective lanes off the bat and a lot of the cross-field shots from (and to) the snake are blocked by the pins. The center also seems to have more weight than on the Paris layout, but the tent-side has potential for carnage. Nice to see how the field actually plays out, but it seems really interesting!

We will probably throw in the final games from all divisions also, so stay tuned.  In future rounds we will try live blogging Cyclone games, but we are yet able to do this.

So, first league round will be played in Ikaalinen a town some 250 klicks from downtown Helsinki. Games are played on Bitburg layout with the schedule divided to Div 3 and League for Saturday.  On Sunday Div 1 and 2 are fighting for gold. Continue reading ‘Live League: 2011 #1 Ikaalinen’ »

Season 2011 Is Finally Here!

It’s been a long while since the tournament season has started this late for Helsinki Cyclone. Ever since the inception of the Millennium Series, the team has started the tournament season with a trip somewhere warm to play the series, or at least wait out a storm or a volcano. Or both. :) This year the Cyclone family has a few weddings and a bunch of other responsibilities that forced us to take a year off from the Millennium Circuit. Fear not, we will return in 2012! Meanwhile, the SPBL Finnish league will start next weekend in Ikaalinen, and we’re STOKED!

Interview with Mikko Huttunen – DYE Snow and LA Ironmen

Over the winter we have been reading various rumors and bits of gossip about DYE branching into snow sports, but there hasn’t been too much concrete information. With the PSP season opener in Galveston, Texas showing Mikko Huttunen amiss from the Ironmen back line, we figured that something is really bubbling under. We contacted Mikko and discussed a lot of recent topics.

PSP Galveston Final Video by Monkey With A Gun

The PSP Galveston final game is online! The series of youtube videos produced by Patrick Spohrer and Monkey With a Gun have kept me glued to the screen for a good part of the week. Have to say, that when the lack of a live webcast became clear earlier this year , I was really disappointed. In retrospect, I have to say that this is a much better option than just the live webcast with a few games possibly being onlline later, like it was in 2009.  As the quality of the production has been absolutely fabulous with multiple well thought-out camera positions and Matty Marshall as the main commentator, you can only be thrilled! Enjoy the final with SD Dynasty going against Boston Red Legion!

Dynasty wins Red Legion in finals and PSP Galveston.

Dynasty takes the title winning Boston Red Legion in the finals 7-2. After impressive scores in prelim games and loosing only one match to Boston Red Legion, Dynasty gets an rematch and pulls it off in the finals. I don’t think that many of us would have predicted Dynasty winning the first event but new PSP rule changes have for sure made an difference in the Pro bracket. Congrats to Dynasty and PSP season looks to be quite interesting for 2011.

Preliminary scores from APPA

APPA doesn’t yet have official semifinal scores up but in semifinals met Dynasty vs. Infamous and
Boston Red Leg vs. Tampa Bay Damage.

Monkey with a Gun has already uploaded Dynasty vs. Boston Red Legion preliminary game to YouTube
and hopefully we will see rest of the games later.
