Social Paintball has been quick to get J-Rab’s interview online. It seems that the curse of the third tournament is also present at the pro level, and just like us, everything seemed ok up to the point when it was proven that it was not. I’m really pleased that Social Paintball did the interview and that J-Rab found the decency and sportsmanship to try and explain the best he could.

SK Moscow have again really made an effort in getting high quality material of CPL games. Absolutely fantastic stuff, they seem to be getting more and more cameras to each event and the editing makes sure everything worth seeing is captured on tape. Memory card. Whatever. Great stuff anyway!

It’s already been a month after the first leg of the SPBL Finnish Championship League, sorry about that – we had a bit of a landscaping project after the tournament, and a sudden outbreak of summer weather made dating a laptop the last in line for things to do.. Still a day left before the second tournament though!
Coming into the season 2011 after winning the championship last year, we knew there was no easy ride to victory as we would be the ones to beat this season. We did a punishing (but voluntary) physical fitness program over the winter months – many of the guys lost quite a bit of weight and gained endurance. After some time off from the markers we begun the weekly trips to Sparta Reball, some 160Km from Helsinki to blast tons of reps and drive back home again. As the spring progressed, we begun outdoor practises at our own field, grinding at the sandpit up to three times a week for a month before the first tournament – only to have our asses handed to us in the two first games.

After quite a lot of sweat and tears and not too much blood on the field, we finally got the turf project finished and it needed a proper initiation. The beautiful sunday consisted of a lot of sunshine, a few games, a few drills, great BBQ food, some zipline fun and swimming in the lake. Great success! We’ve been quite busy recently, sorry for not posting updates since SPBL Ikaalinen.. We do have a tournament report in the oven, and also some insights to how to tackle a turf project. My personal tip of the day, book a trip to Italy for the project week – it’s lot less painful! Most probably I will be hearing reminders of my managerial efforts for at least a few years to come.
We’re also looking into further improving the live scoring for the next SPBL round in Kirkkonummi on June 18th and 19th for your pleasure.
The guys designing the Millennium layouts have been quite creative this year providing us one symmetrical layout, which wasn’t that much fun after all and the Paris layout that seems to offer countless variations off the bat (seems in present tense, as the next SPBL is played on that). The layout for Basildon seems to have some resemblance to the paris design, but it has a lot less effective lanes off the bat and a lot of the cross-field shots from (and to) the snake are blocked by the pins. The center also seems to have more weight than on the Paris layout, but the tent-side has potential for carnage. Nice to see how the field actually plays out, but it seems really interesting!
We moved to a different hosting provider for added space, and did some version updates on the site as well. Hopefully the most of you will not notice too much of a difference (if everything works, that is), but we did change the domain name to www.cyclone.fi for clarity. Traffic from the old links should be redirected automatically, but if something doesn’t seem to work, give us a shout.
It’s been a long while since the tournament season has started this late for Helsinki Cyclone. Ever since the inception of the Millennium Series, the team has started the tournament season with a trip somewhere warm to play the series, or at least wait out a storm or a volcano. Or both. This year the Cyclone family has a few weddings and a bunch of other responsibilities that forced us to take a year off from the Millennium Circuit. Fear not, we will return in 2012! Meanwhile, the SPBL Finnish league will start next weekend in Ikaalinen, and we’re STOKED!
After the BSC tournament on Saturday there seems to be no official afterparty for the event. Luckily our supporter, The Tiger nightclub has welcomed all the BSC players! Find us on the site for additional info!
