JT Sports going belly up?

Again, we feed off the great stuff View from the Deadbox diggs up – you guys should all subscribe to that.

There has been a few notions that Wal-Mart would not be distributing JT products anymore, and  as JT has received over half of its sales through Wal-Mart, the company suffers a hard blow. Hard enough that it might even be forced to close down. For us older guys, this is really sad bit of gossip as JT and Scott were the first really big equipment manufacturers in the sport and were big contributors in the initial growth of paintball.

I feel that this is partially created by the bigger conglomerates gathering a ton of “portfolio companies” that they run to optimize the profitability of the whole portfolio – somewhat distorting the perspective on individual companies and their respective niches. Many saw the entry of the conglomerates and corporate financing as a blessing  and a source of infinite dumping of cash to the sport of paintball, many had their suspicions.

It seems that now when the economic downturn is the deepest the corporate “clean-up” operations leave the marginal industries adrift, and without the determination and drive of a committed entrepreneur or owners the companies lack the animal survival instincts that seem to keep a lot of the small companies hanging on to dear life.

Tough it out guys,  It can’t rain all the time.

EDIT: ProPaintball.com posted up this correction to their earlier news about JT:

Earlier this afternoon incorrect information was published regarding JT USA. We have since spoken with Chuck Geiling of JT who cleared up the confusion. Chuck went on to let us know that JT is back and better than ever. We would like to apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

This is nice to hear, two thumbs up and let’s hope that JT does return even stronger. Still, keep toughing it out!

Selling items trough Wallmart can be risky. With the terms that Wallmart has for its supplyers you might end up loosing money instead of making.

The Ford Report ( http://thefordreport.com/2009/12/jt-sports-on-the-way-out/ ) has been digging up some more and have also had a phone conversation with Chuck Geiling of JT Sports. Chuck denied the rumors, and pointed that their aquisitor, Jarden, had never closed a profitable company in their portfolio.

A related issue was confirmed, though:
“Due to changes in the landscape for Brass Eagle and economic conditions, JT Sports/Brass Eagle had made the decision to get out of the paint manufacturing business, and was in the process of putting up the Neosho, MO facility up for bid for either sale or lease. At this time we have heard of two potential buyers for the equipment and/or facility. The projected closing of the paint manufacturing facility in Neosho is slated for sometime in 2010″ -The Ford report, http://thefordreport.com/2009/12/jt-sports-on-the-way-out/ Dec. 22nd, 2009

This will not affect JT product lines or other products under the corporate umbrella.

To further clarify the issues, Baca Loco (VFTD) has requested a written statement or an email interview from Chuck Geiling to have someting concrete on the rumors.

A local newspaper reports that Brass Eagle will close operations in February 2010.

Note that the article is from a local point of view – only the Neosho plant’s future is discussed.

i have heard that jt sports disp center will eather close or will be moving to st louis to the rawlings disp center in june of 2010 eather way this is a huge loss of jobs to neosho mo which is where both jt sports and brass eagle are located

    Thanks for the update, Kevin!

Luckily – at least as far as I’ve read the local news from the region – there is an active effort from the community to relocate the workers to other companies in the area. Not sure how much openings there are and can new ones be created. Hopefully the overall impact can be reduced through those initiatives.

not many jobs are there as i lived in neosho and worked for jt sports as for the report that chuck gave it was totaly wrong and i just pray that it was a miss intrpretation of the question asked because jt sprots is also included and is going to close in june of 2010
